Proposal
NCP city mayors all institute a sales tax of 15% +/-.
Justification
Inflation bad. Pay to win bad.
Motivation
Add credit sink. Go some way to leveling the advantage of having a player vendor in a prime location.
I love the idea of attempts to bring life to the iconic NPC cities. Bringing a player mall inside city limits is great, and I'm sure it included a significant and much needed credit sink. That does skew the playing field a little though, and make for a large barrier to entry for other potential merchants. I think we could do great things with a slower credit sink that also spreads the price of the advantage over time.

Street merchants. They're kinda there, but not... replace the street merchants with player vendors. 1M to buy one, double the vendor maint cost... It IS something that's always felt like it SHOULD be there, but instead are just window dressing.

Make em to where you can talk to them(If you have an open vendor slot), and say, "I'd like to hire you to sell my wares."
"I can't I'm under contract to Jabba, unless I pay him back 1 million credits I'm stuck working for him."
"I could give you the money to pay off your debt, then can you work for me?"
"A debt for a debt? *sigh* Well, at least you're not going to feed me to a rancor if I don't pay you back. Okay."

Empty vendor maint, or no wares for a month, another person can talk to your vendor, and instead of Jabba, your name.

Last line changes to "A debt for a debt? Well, I'm bored just standin here with nothing to do. Okay!"

Maybe to prevent one player from buying all of them, you can only have one in the galaxy

One of the big issues with street merchants is actually due to player habits: you can list things on the bazaar without cred restrictions, but I've literally listed things on the bazaar for like 80% of the lowest vendor price, and it still expired because vet players have a tendency to skip straight to the vendor tab.

Alternatively, you post a leveling weapon or piece or clothing/armor on the bazaar and POOF! it's bought up like funnel cakes because new players actually do check the bazaar, until they learn at max level the same habits as the vets of skipping to the vendor tab.

While that seems like a great idea, I feel like it may further isolate new players from engaging in the economy as sellers and buyers, since you can't place a trader with a combat toon due to profession reqs. While leveling a trader should come with benefits, I'm not sure those benefits should come at the cost of other players reliably being able to trade items, specifically new players. It seems like something that would be off-putting to newbies, specifically if player vendors in Mos Eisley decided to stock leveling items for newbies, meaning they will have less chance to engage in trade with their own looted/crafted wares.

That said, I like the original idea as a concept and the street merchant idea for how it would help make cities feel more alive.

I like the idea of adding a merchant droid that is crafted by DEs and is essentially a mobile vendor; it could make for some interesting gameplay (swap meets, player events with merchants, etc)

I like the vendor idea. I always thought the in-town houses should be open for renting... balancing that would require some thought, but having the ability to LIVE in Theed, or whatever, would go a long way to decluttering the world, and adding vitality to the cities.

... also, something I've wanted since the original game release.... make Jabba's throne room a functional theater/cantina for entertainers.

A little input from someone that once played a lot of Albion. They force everyone to bid once a month on shop space in cities. Highest bid wins. Could be a way to implement this without being unfair to newcomers later on?

Monthly auctions on houses could work, or tie them to holding specific positions in government of that city?

I'm rather indifferent to the actual suggestion posted, but I rather like some of the ideas posted in the comments, so I'm gonna upvote anyway.

I used to joke with a chef friend that we needed to use a V-35 as a food truck and he could park in a player city some afternoon and sell his treats.

Would also be cool to have a temp store set up maybe with different skins so you could drop down something that looks like a ship, or a fancy merchant tent. Like the storyteller props, but when the times out it packs up automatically to your datapad. Keeping decorations and vendor inside until you drop it again.
