Bring A New Era to Space: Re-introduce Atmospheric Flight

Bring A New Era to Space: Re-introduce Atmospheric Flight
This idea/suggestion is Open. You can respond to ask questions or discuss the idea and either vote it up or down if you believe it should or should not be implemented, respectively. Popular suggestions and ideas will be considered by the development team to become reality in-game.
Proposal
Implement an improved version of atmospheric flight, addressing many of the concerns people had from it's implementation in live (min height/ idle restrictions) to prevent griefing.
Make it so that players can only launch and land in starports.
Justification
This change would bring about a new direction in space development, helping to get more players into the space aspect of SWG.
Motivation
Space and ground SWG feel like two completely separate games.
Introducing this mechanic will bridge the two together, motivating more players to participate in space, and vice versa.
One of the biggest problems that I think many players have with space is that it feels like a completely separate experience from the rest of SWG.
A good way to remedy this, in my opinion, is to work to develop atmospheric flight and introduce it within SWGR.
We have plenty of community feedback from the way it was implemented in live, and an improved version of the mechanic could be introduced, mitigating the concerns many have.
Allowing proper interaction between players in ground and space will bring the communities together.
It seems plenty of spacers are already interested in this change, and pursuing this should boost the space player population in the long term.

For a first implementation, it would be nice to see if the development team can get the mechanic introduced and working.
Then changes to current gameplay methods brought about by this change can be discussed.

(EDIT: To remove confusion and correct my initial wording, I have edited the PV to make it clear that I want a custom implementation in Resto, not just copying the way it was made in live)

Yea it was really fun people blocking shit with yachts, I don't think this was a serious thing for SWG and more of just we know server is dead here is some fun stuff we worked on.

No thx

I haven't played on live when this was introduced. What's the content behind that? Is there any content like Quests, Missions, Badges, Themeparks, Instances, Bosses, loot,...?

I would want to see content rolled in with this, how is it balanced, what activities are coming with it, escort GCW supplies, all of it, on the first pass. I dont want it to be half made, and just have atmo flight, just for the sake of atmo flight. I dont want to just have it working, then sitting on our hands on what to intro with it, later. It should all be ironed out prior to putting everything else on the back burner, because thats whats going to happen.

There are alot of great PVs that need approved by the dev team, and worked on, and for me to up vote this, Id need to know those are going in, being worked on. Im just afraid all the cool shit that has been proposed would get locked in a locker somewhere for a very long time to intro atmo flight.

Theres alot of other things Id rather have attention to before this. Unless this was going to be a massive "expansion" to space. Atmo just for atmo, is a waste of time and limited resources.

Id be happy for an upvote if content was included.

Im down voting for now. But will reserve an up vote for later, if the purpose of atmo is clearly defined.

I always hated "dev time guy," and here I am being the "dev time guy" go figure.

The leaked code we have was from before atmospheric flight, so there is no "just turn it on". Everything would have to written from scratch.

I feel like the devs working on this project, should they choose to implement an atmospheric flight system, are probably capable of making changes to it so that the shortcomings that may have existed in the past are not a problem. So please enlighten me if this is wrong, but I don't see the relevance of "one time it wasn't good" when this isn't that one time and things can be adjusted.

Adding more systems for better immersion is one of the more interesting possibilities, I feel. I think at the very least this idea should be explored. If something is fun and possible, why not try?

I agree with this, but also would like to know what role atmospheric flight would hold on the server for the current state of the game?

The way the PV is written, it seems to be just “bring it back cause it was cool!”. And while I agree with the sentiment, it would need to be more than just cool to have a reason to exist in the game.

I appreciate what you mean and I am sure that's something that can be looked at, like having a floor and a ceiling probably could make for interesting limitations in combat or like maybe certain restrictions, I don't know. But then it calls into question why does hyperspace exist. It functions. you can take off on a planet, travel to another system, land on a different planet. Why not take that out and make it more direct? I think if there's something to do that's nice but it doesn't need to be efficient by any means, you know what I mean? I think efficiency and explicit purpose are nice but not as important as vibe, from an immersion standpoint.

Downvote for now, Dev time in space would be better used else where like group duties PVP deep space update, guild wars in space/petra style space the re reverse engineering stuff, adding something because it looks cool is great but seems like a hell of a lot of work to get it to function properly never played on live so have no experience with it but so many have mentioned all the bugs that just doesn't sound fun at all to fix for the devs

This sounds like something to put on a poster and that no one would use because its empty and suggests removing the only function it had previously, ground interaction. I'd be open to it coming back with some defined function/content, but not just because.

Would love to have option for atmospheric flights, but understand if its currently too buggy to make into reality yet.
Maybe start by limiting it for certain types of small ships, like Z-95, T-Wing, TIE-Fighter, etc. while excluding big ones like Firespray, PoB and gunships for deep space only?

As the first step to introducing a new system this is a great PV. Trying to introduce new content in an unexploded system is putting the cart before the horse.

Introducing atmospheric flight and making sure it does not passively hinder the ground game is a great and immersive idea that will branch off and spawn an entirely new subculture of ideas and discussions.

I believe the devs are also adult and mature enough to decide for themselves what is or isn't worth their time and trust they will look at this and interest generated for themselves.

I am baffled by some of the objections in here. This is a sandbox game and atmo flight would be an expansion of that sandbox. I'm surprised so many swg players can't imagine any activities that could be available to us by opening this door. If you need ideas laid out for you, head over to the space senate discord where it is being discussed.

If you are worried about dev time, don't. Devs do what they can, when they can. The PV is simply an up down vote of who would be interested in atmo flight. With 100% agreement, it still may not make the priority list. Downvoting it for reasons other than really disliking the idea of atmospheric flight is counterproductive to even having a PV process.

Assuming we would implement the buggy, broke, troll enabled version that SOE dropped at first is the most smooth brained of objections so far. We have data and experience to not make the same mistakes.

Has potential to create so many interesting interactions with many parts of the game

Agree with max, downvoting just because it was implemented poorly during live is lame

The original PV literally said "re-implement the atmospheric flight mechanic released within the last few months of live" - is it so baffling and "smooth brain" that people would read that as implementing the version we had on live, as that's exactly what it said?

I am confused why you are opposed to adding some substance to a PV? The purpose of a PV isn't to vote for a black box. If you need a refresher of the guidance I would recommend: About PlayerVoice - What is It & How to Use It

People should not have to read through hundreds of discord messages to understand what a PV is about either. And considering the number of ideas being thrown around it's even more unclear what this PV is about.

Ideas being thrown around like this (from discord) are enough to make me never want to implement atmospheric flight without some clearer direction, FYI.

"Ground players of that same faction then have an ability to mark a specific area with the flare AOE ability (faction cooldown like general airstrike). Enemy players/objectives in this area will then be attackable by player ships"

PV is clear, do like the idea of implementing atmospheric flight or not? It's not a pole on what people prefer devs to work on. It's not a list of every possible use of the mechanic if it get implemented.

Sorry I hurt your feelings
