Proposal
CSRs should have to identify themselves in game and in Discord.
Justification
CSRs should not be able to anonymously antagonize community members when they have the power to ban accounts that fire back.
Motivation
A couple of community members have been banned in the past week after public arguments with the same group of people. This has left a bad taste in a lot of our mouths about how moderation is being handled on this server.
Due to recent events over the past couple of weeks, it's become quite clear that CSRs being anonymous players who constantly initiate PVP trash talk is a problem. I completely understand the idea that a developer that plays his own game makes better games. However a CSR's job is literally moderation, and when the moderator is initiating bullying campaigns on players, and then banning anyone that stands up for themselves, then something needs to change.

This thread will be flooded with the friends of the person in question to claim this doesn't happen, but anyone that has been paying attention to the public PVP channel for the past week has seen it. "The funny part is, if I did what I was told, I would never post in here" clearly shows that this person has been talked to about this behavior in the past, and continues to push forward with it. Turning a banned player's appeal message into a copypasta and posting it in public channels also shows a gross misuse of power. At the very least, CSR accounts should be marked so players know to ignore and move on when targeted by this person.

I was asked by other rebels, not staff, to ignore pvp chat because it's exclusively populated by bad actors trying to get a rise. This continued accusation of me of all people being staff is hilarious. Good luck with your witch hunt, but even if they did what you are requesting, it would just show I am not staff, just one of the only people left on the reb side of things willing to engage with you malcontents in the pvp channel.

If they are anonymous how would you even know? Oh and this seems to violate the CS?

Intended to break, implies the breaking of, or discusses the anonymity of a Staff Account;

Sorry but this is a messed up salt post at best.

Self-martyrdom won't prove anything. Could have saved people a lot of trouble and just /uninstalled like an adult.

why were they banned, karen? (it probably wasn't 'arguing with staff')

this is the most insane shit i've seen today, grats.

Abso-fucking-lutely no. I was a GM in a pvp centric mmo for several years. The abuse from the community that took place when one our GM's accidently got out'd was deployable.

While I don’t necessarily agree with removing anonymity for CSR, I certainly hope more than a single person is involved in the decision to permanently ban somebody, and I certainly hope that everybody involved is identifying every single interaction that could have escalated to said ban. Some transparency as to how the system works would be great.

On the other hand. More discord mutes/bans should be happening considering how absolutely awful the PvP channel is. It even seems that when staff gets involved to calm things down, it does absolutely nothing to deter the usual suspects who’ll be back within an hour or two with the same stuff. Taking away their ability to engage with discord would prevent a lot of these escalations imo.

If you read the Community Standards page it does give a good deal of information on all that.

I hear you, I am somewhat familiar with the situation that sparked this very PV and things seem to be far from transparent. Permabanning somebody has an impact on more than just the person getting banned and while I am not saying people do not deserve bans at times. As it stands, it appears a small subset of the player base is able to make these types of decisions without much thought. When it comes to any CSR being heavily involved in PvP, that's where things get iffy imo, especially with how toxic the ground PvP community is on this server (and many other servers, you're all nuts! lmao), things are bound to be said, or seen, and powers are bound to be abused. Some transparency would help in determining whether that's actually true or not, dealing in hypotheticals is never a good idea when it comes to CSR decisions.

I don't know enough about how moderation is done here to really say if things need to change for how they do things. Maybe that needs to be looked at? But the main point of this PV is to remove anonymity of moderators.

Since we have to give a reason before we down vote a PV, mine is that I can't see of a reason for moderators not to be anonymous. What's the goal in removing that protection? Harassing them in or outside the game because of a decision they had to make?

For SURE I think there needs to be an appeals process for bans and the like, just like there should be a "report" option for something that's maybe overbearing. And I don't think that should ever be closed off to anyone. But, I also don't think there's any reason to know who a moderator is unless you're the one paying them.

Open minded about it, though! Maybe there are reasons that don't boil down to "mob justice" so please clue me in if you have any!

Not sure what your angle is.

The moderation here is incredibly lenient, many have been given several chances despite poor behaviour and are still here; much to the detriment of the community at large.

The 'small subset of playerbase making these decisions' is a baseless gripe, the same people have been making the same decisions, and anyone can volunteer to join them.

Problem is that there is never and I mean never any way to do this in a way in which it won't make someone or some small subset upset. They standards lays out how bans work and how you have to get up to a point for a permaban to occur usually. A number of people have accrued points and know they are getting close or closer to that line. End of the day don't break the rules and you are fine. They even give the pvp channel a lot of leeway in this area as well. Plus there is an appeal process too. End of day I think they are as transparent as it needs to be because any further just leads to constant bickering, abuse, but what about johhny, and so on. It is real easy to follow the rules here. If more people would take the time to actually read the Community Standards that might help too.

Not really getting why you think I have an angle, if you care to elaborate. I'm not fighting the decision that was made, rather trying to understand who all is involved in these decisions because it seems that in this particular case, the person who made the decision was directly involved in the incident. Due to the nature of the server and its size, it's hard to say "this CS rep is involved so needs to be removed from the conversation about the punishment" because, let's face it, most CS reps know each other and will likely side with their side over a random player's. That's my angle, I guess? Trying to figure out how a perma-ban decision is made (not this one or any specific ones, just as a general guideline), who is involved, etc.

I can see your point. I wish other measures could be taken in game and out of the game before such decisions are made. Discord bans or mutes could have been given out... or even the ultimate PvPer punishment... ban their entire account from any PvP activities for X amount of time! That would maybe keep some people in line, who knows.

Home skillet, I was not involved in the decision because I am not in the staff. If you are building your entire argument on the assumption that I am staff, you are building in quick sand and should consider what motivation the people telling you I am staff have to manipulate you

Not really getting why you think I have an angle
Because you seem to be building a sandcastle entirely from the obviously biased (and fictional) telling of events provided in the original PV.

So either you have an angle or someone is hand puppeteering you with misinformation.

The Community Standards tell you exactly how. Please go read them.

Heya,

I have not been on the server for very long (about 3 weeks) so I am not familiar with the in's and out's of the pvp chat and how toxic it can be. But from a new player looking upwards, it is a bit concerning hearing from another player who has been active for longer that it feels as if the CSR's are cliquey and would biased to side with each other.

I think a pretty simple solution to remove the "things getting iffy" from this situation is where if something happens in PVP and a CSR is involved in the incident, the incident should just be passed off to a separate CSR and each party involved should be made anonymous to not skew their decision to favor fellow CSR's. Granted, it is a small community and you might be able to deduce who is who even in anonymous chat logs, however it does feel slightly inappropriate that someone involved in the incident can then make a ruling on it.

To clarify, I think removing anonymity of the CSR's would be an AWFUL decision in the long run and would result in harassment they didn't sign up to be a part of. However making the involved players anonymous and passing the incident to an outside CSR could also help show malintent by other CSR's if there actually is any, which people don't seem to be providing proof for.

From what I have seen on the community standards it takes quite a bit to get banned on here, so this could also be something that is already in place and I am just not familiar enough with the server to know this, if that is the case ignore me completely and carry on.

Again, I am not on staff or a CSR, they are just lieing to try and force Ornj to out staff members so they can harass them.

I never claimed you were? I am giving a perspective of a new playing watching this unfold hearing how that some CSR's could be biased and cliquey (specifically in terms of pvp) and could easily turn people away from this server.

I even stated I think CSR's should remain anonymous. It is an awful idea to change it so everyone knows them, just for harassment purposes to name one reason. But if the current system is that a CSR that is involved can then make a ruling, that does seem a bit inappropriate. That was the main idea of my message and I apologize if it came off any other way.
