Proposal
Introduce a character-specific, scaling credit fee for name changes to serve as a sustainable in-game money sink.
  • Character Baseline: Every single character receives exactly one free rename.
  • Tracking: Rename counts and costs are locked to individual characters, not the overall account.
  • Scaling Cost: The second rename costs 1,000,000 credits, doubling with each subsequent change (2M, 4M, 8M) up to a maximum cap of 10,000,000 credits.
  • Engine Alternative: If technical limitations prevent progressive scaling, apply a flat credit fee (e.g., 5,000,000 credits) for any rename after the initial free character token.
Justification
While the game automatically updates blocklists and friends lists when a player renames, a free name change every 90 days still allows people to completely shed their social reputation. Other players may see an unfamiliar name on their blocklist, but they will no longer know who that person actually is or what they did to get blocked. Free renames allow individuals to wipe the slate clean and escape the social consequences of toxic behavior, griefing, or scamming. Adding a financial cost ensures players must take responsibility for their identity and cannot easily hide from their past actions.
Motivation
The primary goal is to protect the social fabric of the community. In a close-knit community, reputation is everything. This system deters players from constantly shifting names just to escape a bad reputation and trick unsuspecting players, while still preserving a fair, one-time safety net for legitimate players who simply want to fix a typo or alter their character's concept.
This proposal introduces a character-specific credit fee for renaming characters, moving away from the current system of unlimited free name changes. Every individual character will receive their first rename completely free of charge. Any subsequent rename on that specific character will incur a scaling credit cost that doubles with each use until it hits a maximum cap. This creates a valuable new in-game money sink while encouraging players to maintain a consistent identity within the community.

I like renaming frequently for fun, some of use to it to fit certain builds or themes.
Shouldn't let bad actors ruin it for the rest of us.
Downvoting.

I upvoted because I can see one mistake in naming a char at creation. Past that I can only imagine the reasons to be nefarious. But I tend to be a person lacking in imagination.

The name might change but the behaviour won't, if anything breaches ToS then the better solution is to submit a support ticket.

I feel like the ignore list scenario would be easier served by adding a comment/note section like the friends list has.

While I understand the idea behind this suggestion, I see rename fee bit harmful for the roleplayers, who may wish to make a new character without losing their badges, collections, etc. (by paying a large sum of credits for the Image Designer to change their race and later change their name,) thus downvote.

Downvoting for similar reasons to those already listed. I've used /rename for character changes (since there is a small character limit) without losing badges and activity time. With those came a species change which was already 1 mil. Another mil on top is a bit excessive imo.

Resto has an account infraction system for any trolling that is actually egregious so I think that negates the need to track anyone's name history.

There could be better mechanics around renaming which should prevent people from erasing their identity and wrongdoings in one big swoop, but this wouldn’t fix it, it would simply be an inconvenience.
