Proposal
Keep generative AI out of resto and work to replace the current AI art with human made designs from the community
Justification
With the current perception of gen-AI art being lazy, lacking any sort of appreciation for real art, and built on plagiarizing real artists (not even including the terrible environmental and economic impact) I feel that we shouldn't continue to add artwork made with such a technology into our retro mmo. To continue doing so, in my opinion, actively goes against what makes this game, and how it came to be, special.
Motivation
Seeing multiple people, myself included, lose excitement for the 5th anniversary because our gifts were AI slop paintings, makes me want to at least have this discussion.
Pretty self explanatory, I think with the current shift in public sentiment around gen-AI art we really should have a say as a community whether we even want this slop in our retro mmo.

I personally think it adds nothing and only hurts the image of the server to continue to add gen-AI assets, even if they are currently limited to paintings.

The amount of entitlement is truly amazing , this dev team is doing this on their FREE time , the game itself is FREE , be thankful there is a team willing do spend part of their time and life on this project.
While I'm no fan of A.I. slop, I understand why sometimes things go that way. The anniversary paintings were a little token to celebrate by no means did the dev team have to make them and if you do not like them , there is an easy solution delete them.
Have you and the multiple people you mentioned talked about perhaps finding artists to donate their time and effort to create hand-made art works instead of just complaining and making this unnecessary PV ?
 
I have, and will continue to sing the dev's praises with their work on this game.

They were doing just fine before gen-AI was a thing and I think returning to that would only be a positive.
No one is ASKING them to give us more paintings.
I would rather us get nothing new if it means having to resort to AI for it

like i said if the A.I. paintings disgust you so much then delete them and problem solved , instead of coming to cry about it here and making a PV , why not you and your purist art friends reach out to the dev team about creating free hand art assets for the game instead?

i have not used any insults unless you consider me writing "cry about it " an insult , either way someone being "offended" by an A.I. generated painting in a 20yr old dead game tells the story

As convenient and helpful as using procedural gen is for covering the gap in asset creation, I would rather do without than make using it standard procedure. Pro Gen is the darkside of art creation, it's faster and easier, but you inevitably grow to rely on it and cease to value the real deal anymore. If we could live in a world where people were perfect and we were able to limit it's use to minor things, I believe using it at all just leads to using it more and more. The one ring and all that

In this dark age of AI, we should support real artists more than ever, who are struggling everywhere around the world, as well preserve nature.
If the server need more paintings, you could just host small art contests where players can post their personal handyworks and voted winners could be rewarded with something nice, like Galactic Fortitude and/or Veteran Tokens.

Yes, the game is 20+ years old, but it dont mean we can cast away and ignore ethical morality.
And before someone throw infamous "You're ablelist for hating AI" - line, do consider that by saying that you reveal being ableist yourself, reflecting belief that disabled and challenged people are unable to make any art. Which is not true, as there has been artists who have done art despite being blind, deaf, etc.

So are you volunteering to pay a real artist who is struggling to make art and paintings for this server ?
 
I would love if we had art contests

We have endless themes as possibilities and its such an easy way to further build the community, especially considering we're in a nice era of growth

Imagine something fun like a Boonta Eve Memorial where people draw an RIP of their favorite racer that died in Episode 1

Youre saying this as if not a single person in our community would draw something if the devs made an art contest style event

We're not asking for the mona lisa here, chill out

I dont care about the quality, i just want humans making the art that goes into the game

Who said about volunteering?
If it was my game, then yes, I would pay, as I've done so before whenver wanting a portrait for my D&D tabletop characters or homebrew campaign as DM.
And I did threw idea of rewarding artists for their fanworks that may get added to the game, be it ingame tokens or credits.

I dont own the game server and the Resto team can do what they wish with it, but here in the Player Voice we have right to make our minds heard what we would like to see or not, thus the today's subject of if we wish to see AI being supported or not.

i was replying to the guy who feels so strongly about supporting real artists who are struggling everywhere around the world , so one would think that he would be the first to volunteer for such a task right ? right ?? also i thought you were done engaging with me :sneaky:

I remember going to the Bestine Menagerie for the first time and wondered what most of the pictures in there were meant to be of, especially the ones by the entrance/exit. It's all AI slop and painfully so. For a menagerie, I feel like the last thing you'd want in there are AI pictures. There is certainly enough original artwork from the game to put in there instead. Upvoted.
