Introduction to PVP

Introduction to PVP
This idea/suggestion is Open. You can respond to ask questions or discuss the idea and either vote it up or down if you believe it should or should not be implemented, respectively. Popular suggestions and ideas will be considered by the development team to become reality in-game.
Proposal
1. Add some sort of introduction to pvp quest line which cap be against npcs but is actually to teach you how to pvp. What foods, how to use them, when to use them. Setting up tools bars, basic beginner pvp items etc. And anything else that helps.

2. Add some sort of protection for new to pvp from the pros? While they find there feet.
Let's say under a certain rank maybe private I dunno you can only be killed by other privates as an example. Or a number or kills systems which allows you at least know what your doing.
Justification
Give people the chance to get into pvp in a way that builds confidence and ability instead of forcing and alienating.
Motivation
Pvp is constant changing content. It's challenging but daunting as the pros are good.

Let's bridge the gap and maybe more people will get involved.
PVP is a massive talking point and how to get more people into it. Forcing people and extra rewards either turns people away from the server or feeds the few who love it and let's call them what they are they are the pros. Well organised teams fighting the galactic war. What they love.

As a new to swg or a pve player with no experience it's daunting and not clear how to get ready, what stuff does, what you need. The "get good" comments you see just shows elitism and is off putting to spend my few hours getting my ass handed to me while I figure it out when I could be enjoying the game doing something else.

So how can we bridge that gap to get people involved so they are at least capable.

I feel foods along with stats etc should be explained as part of the New Player Tutorial. If people knew what the stats meant, the stances and foods/spices surely it benefits all type of gameplay. Isn't PvE an introduction to PvP?

There’s a pretty robust wiki page that explains gearing up for PvP and all the consumables. https://swgr.org/wiki/gearing_guide/

The issue with any tutorial in this regard is you have to have the knowledge and items before entering, like pvp itself. Currently, after reading the wiki and getting all setup, it’s quite easy to do your own tutorial by practicing in pve(even if it’s overkill) to understand fill and consumable flow.

I wouldn't say it's overkill to practise in PvE, especially if you are a BH doing extremely dangerous bounties and also getting into Champion of Mustafar really gets you needing to know what foods etc you have to have and why.

I get that PvP is quite hard to get to and is daunting when starting out, but as Shintu said there is a pretty comprehensive guide on how to gear up for it and what consumables to use & what they do.

I got into PvP less than a year ago (I've played since launch, with 1 long break) just by jumping in and seeing what happened, and observing what other players do when I fight them. I checked the combat logs and learned to get better by making recordings of my gameplay to see where I went wrong or to see what other people did. You will die a good bit, you'll lose 1v1 fights - but you get better. You eventually start noticing things and getting the "ah-ha" moments realising why you died & what you can do to prevent it. You start learning what works and what doesn't.

Its better than ever to get into PvP now because of Moof Mud protecting your precious gear. You don't *have* to be fully geared to get stuck in either (especially if you're a melee due to defensives).

Maybe there needs to be quests that award food/drink (like during legacy or otherwise) to get new players used to the fill & drink mechanic which will be a great start, as it currently is NGEified. I feel this might be good in the new player tutorial either...

Giving privates immunity to higher ranks probably would be a bad idea. Could see it leading to confusion and frustration about who is actually attackable by who in group fights.

I know there that is an actual tutorial has been in the works from what devs have said on discord.
It definitely needs to give players a few free supplies to have them try themselves that are critical to understanding survivability in this game, those being...
Spice
Wafers
Stims
Ruby Bliel
Tutorial could then briefly explain the fill mechanic and that there are other food buffs with longer durations that give stat bonuses.
Also give the player a free nooby tape for them to put on a piece of gear, and briefly explain the stats.

open to in-game tutorial for PvP of some kind, probably can just be incorporated into new player experience stuff; not sure about the private s rank thing, but I'm open to conceptually the idea of giving a new character (e.g., before turning 30 days old) having some sort of bolster buff to get started in PvP, however, I'm not sure if that's helping or hurting, to be honest, because it'd probably be a rough turnaround after that drops.

/duel is practice mode for PvP... if the server PvPers want to encourage more players to join the fight, perhaps one or more of them could start up a club ...for ya know, fighting. :) I'd contend that a person with potential interest in getting involved would probably be happier and more likely to keep flagging if they got to bond a bit with the folks that they'll be fighting aside and against. OOC grudges and bad first experiences are the real killers of the PvP scene.

The private bit was a stretch I admit but a tutorial would help. I k ow there Is loads of information out there but it is a little daunting.

Do bear in mind I have had to explain how to survey and harvest to people for me so the easier and more accessible it is to learn the more people you will get involved.

As a player new to this server who wants to have a better understanding of PvP just finding that post is useful. But...
I only found it be cause I was reading Player Voice posts. Not exactly a great solution.
Having some kind of simple in game optional PvP non-repeatable introduction quest line would probably work just fine. Have it reward some of the most used pvp buff items while explaining the purpose could work. Also having sections that explain important stats for each class specific for PvP on this server.
Another option is to get some guide videos made up featuring information from experienced PvP players detailing with mechanics from a more general SWG perspective to a Restoration specific perspective.

Really this.

There is already a "fight club" of sorts but the problem with it is that it follows what people think of "fight clubs". Exclusive, hard to get accepted into, and a need to know the right people. Many won't even start down the road if that's what it feels like.

Therefore, it needs to be public, inviting, and above all patient to pull the new player up, not a series of quick deaths to "teach the hard way". This doesn't have to be a school of hard knocks, y'all... it really doesn't....

I definitely do not agree about the fight club sentiment. The PVP community is always willing to help and teach those that express interest. At least in my experience that is.

Willingness does not define success. If all the other parts that I mentioned were present, and the people's consensus were that's the place to go (whereas it's not even mentioned in general chat) we wouldn't even be having this discussion. I think that those that run it should be more introspective than defensive. Or others should set it up and show how it should be done, "willingness" notwithstanding. It's about the patient, empathetic method that teachers MUST possess, not just willingness.

But I digress.

Honestly 1.1 combat changes made the learning curve much easier for people wanting to step into pvp for the first time, it has never been easier to simply get some basic and affordable gear and jump into the action. There are plenty of people on both factions that will help you and teach you all the pvp basics you simply have to reach out to them, and there is also a lot of material about pvp in some community partner channels. Using a "pve" tutorial with npcs to teach you the basics about pvp is awkward because the magic of pvp is precisely that its hard to ancitipate to your enemy's actions unlike pve where you know exactly the mechanics in place and what is going next. However i agree that foods/drinks and consumables in general should be part of the new player tutorial as that will be crucial for them to understand the basic game mechanics not only for pvp.
