Proposal
Have an option to *fix* the mouse mode to pointer. No matter what windows I open or close, just leave it on pointer.
Justification
I prefer having the mouse mode on the pointer version. If I open a window and then close the window, the mouse mode often (but not always...?) goes back to the movement mode. I would *LOVE* to set it to only be on pointer mode. I've changed all options that look like they should have an impact, but none have
Motivation
Having the mouse mode continuously (and seemingly randomly) switching gets in the way of gameplay. I use the right mouse button to turn and this only works when in pointer mode. Having one of my primary controls stop working while I figure out how many times to hit alt is dangerous for my character and annoying for me.
The mouse mode switching all the time gets annoying.

+1 for this!!!!

Additionally it would also be nice to be able to unbind or rebind the keymapping (ALT key) for switching between the two modes. I'm constantly alt-tabbing between SWG and other apps on my computer. For some reason this cannot be changed so my mouse mode changes all the time.

No it just makes it the default. It still changes back to movement mode when doing various things like opening / closing windows, going into space etc.
You can switch between the modes by pressing ALT but its just annoying when you want point mode all the time

Ah I see. Not my preference but I'll give it an upvote anyway. I'm all for being able to customize controls however you want.
