Proposal
Let players who are civilian aligned on the ground become Rebel or Imperial Pilots
Justification
Factional ground players can be neutral pilots so why can't the reverse be allowed, I don't think it would break anything but I'm willing to be told otherwise
Motivation
With options becoming better as a civilian on the ground for PVP/PVE content it's attracting more and more players. However when you take this path you heavily limit your choice to being only a Freelance pilot.
Would it really be game breaking for civilian ground players to be a Rebel or Imperial pilot? You technically can flag for either side as Freelance by picking Corsec every time you launch as far as I understand, so you're just limited on the ship options.

Just more flexibility to options.

I don’t see any glaring reason to not allow this.

Only positives. No reason a merc neutral ground player can’t work for one side or the other in space.

Edit

Originally I thought the proposal was more on the lines of:

Merc ground
Rebel space

Lock merc on ground to rebel activities/ helper

As more light of this

It’s appears the suggestion is

Merc ground
Rebel space

Merc can act as rebel or imp on ground.

I would disagree with this, large discussion on discord

But a spacer unless fully neutral on both ground and space shouldn’t be able to kill imp players in space, and then land a kill rebel players on ground, unless they are acting as a full neutral / freelancer in both land and air.

I think it's just a roleplay/immersion thing. "You can't join the navy without being in their military" kind of thing. As a game system I believe you should be able to have the right to choose navy only as civilian on ground. Upvoted

Down vote, whilst yes a rebel or imp can go neutral there are caveats to it.

I can't be a rebel on the ground and RSF in space without issues. And that's just the PVE side of it. You can't go imperial helper or imperial SF.

Why should you be able to dive in PvP as a rebel SF Merc then immediately jump to space as an imperial Navy pilot.

Makes zero sense to me.

So unless you're also asking for a fraction lock on the ground IF are factioned in space which at that point you might as well just be faction for both.

You've also got a whole GCW/prestige/mercenary system to have to work around as well.

You can PVP as a rebel on the ground and then imperial in space the only downside is you're locked to neutral ships, if you're gonna remove your ability to flag both sides in space why not just be able to join imperial navy also?

Yes it you're a true neutral a proper mercenary. and again the only 2 neutral squads you can really do it with are smugglers alliance and corsec.

I have no idea what you're saying in that second part.

i agree that you if you are in the imp navy you are still in the imp military. the Imperial machine would never let you fly for them if you are a rebel on the ground and refuse to acknowledge them when not flying. /shrug. its silly.

fwiw I'm not asking for rebel ground players to be able to be Imperial pilots, I'm asking for NEUTRAL players to be able to pick a navy and help out in space

i edited my response. not sure why i put rebel. You can already pick a navy to help out. always have been if you are neutral/merc.

Freelance ships are pvp balanced around the ability to hop, with a few exclusives that are meta themselves. (Vaksai, Havoc)

But freelance mirrors and near peers are slightly worse than factionals in a given mirrored role. (N-1, Ixy).

I support the PV to fix the hitboxes and ixy adjustments to make things more favorable for more ships in Freelance, but I don't want to see us shift to a mirror ships mentality. The flexibility is the perk. If this went in, i think we'd just see less privateer ships in PvP, or calls for more mirrors.

Downvote.

Not quite sure on the pushback here and I feel like the concept behind this getting lost:
OP wants GROUND neutrals to be able to choose any factional navy, not just Privateer.

Rebels can either be Rebel Pilot or Privateer.
Imperials can either be Imperial Pilot or Privateer.

I don't see a reason outside of someone's personal roleplay why a GROUND neutral can't have a bias as to what navy they choose to fly with.

I posted this on discord. but I would be cool with making the three trees within privateer "faction flexible" for certain ships. I.E. RSF can fly some imperial ships. Smuggler can fly some Alliance ships.

I'm downvoting, this just doesn't really make sense to me. AFAIK I can't wear faction armor as a neutral, that's a sacrifice I make choosing to be neutral, I don't see why neutral players should be able to fly faction ships without any of the commitment or danger that comes with that.

Because they can go PVPn as a rebel SF, go doing th rebel theme park etc etc then junp straight in their tie fighter and go killing rebels.

A mercenary is a mercenary and it thematically makes sense for them but they wouldn't then jump in their xwing or tie fighter.

Now if that space faction was going to lock them to purely being imp helper or imp af jist like faction grou d freelance apace does that's a different matter bit that's not what the PV is asking and the argument would be just go that faction.

You can be a Ground-Rebel that's a Privateer pilot in the RSF squadron and freely destroy rebel ships, then land and go kill imperials. I don't really see the difference here personally.

A mercenary can switch factions in 2 minutes on the ground to go from killing imperials to rebels and then back again if they wanted to.

This PV opens the sandbox a little further in my opinion which should always be the goal if its not completely immersion breaking, e.g. imperial ground with rebel pilot.

Privateers with a ground faction cannot flag combatant or flag overt for anything other than their ground faction. Some of the privateer squads can shoot random NPCs opposite their ground faction, but they can't participate in GCW score or token earning activities that aren't aligned with their faction.
