Proposal
My proposal is to add some kind of sub component for weapons (like a barrel or a reinforcement core) so you can change either energy or kinetic damage of the weapon regardless of the weapon skin, and also add a new type of PSG with kinetic protection.
Justification
Currently all people use kinetic dmg on PvP (except some mele weapons since these ignore psg) because of the huge downside of hitting through a PSG mitigation, so with this change everyone could use both energy or kinetic PSGs depending on the situation and also craft your preferred weapon skin with the desired dmg type, making both dmg types relevant again.
Motivation
This way you can use the best looking weapon for you without the downside of it being energy or kinetic making that specific weapon useless in some situations.
This is a PvP change mostly because on PvE most of ranged npcs hit you with energy and melee npcs with kinetic so it doesnt really matters. It would be a huge improvement to pvpers imo and also a new income and demand for both weaponsmiths and armorsmiths. Also this would greatly benefit recon armor users because they currently lack kinetic protection and have no chance to add extra protection on that side except for ent buffs, while assault armor users already can supply the lack of energy protection with the PSG.

This suggestion has been implemented. Votes are no longer accepted.

Great idea. I'm sure people are tired of hearing me complain but that's another downside to smuggler in pvp: we can only use recon armor. Being able to use a kinetic PSG would be wonderful.

Up with the PSG layer. But... some weapons fire projectiles, some are blasters. (I think - I am pondering this) I'd rather see modified skins so you had a different weapon than a layer. Being able to decide on a kinetic or energy weapon is certainly good - I'm not sure you need to have both options in every skin though.

Its all about character customization really, you dont really have this problem with armor because we use the nge code so we can use any appearance items over our actual gear which is great imo. The kinetic psg would offer more variety of tactics in pvp and greatly benefit recon users too to compensate. Also the projectile/blaster argument is not true at all because some skins like the jinkins clearly shoots blasters and its actually kinetic dmg

Slight necro on this post but feel this change is quite important to implement.

Also have a question about this...in addition to this would it be feasible to implement a PSG that has both kinetic and energy resistance, but splitting the protection in half, i.e. a PSG might have 1250 kinetic/1250 energy protection instead of just 2500 in one. Is there any reason why this isn't possible as well?

Legends did it, so yeah

To reiterate, this is an effective and uncomplicated solution to a problem that disqualifies a significant amount of weapon appearances from consideration from use in pvp. Not only is it simple, it has been tested and proven to be an effective with no real negative impacts on balance or the player economy.

Kinetic PSG doesn't make sense from a sci-fi perspective..

If anything just remove PSG's, or alternatively make a belt that gives armour values just like a normal piece of armour does

perhaps the armour is 50/50 split and a PSG is full energy
PSG's only work vs ranged energy weapons so isn't that big of a trade off to sacrifice a 50/50 armour against all vs 100% against ranged weapon. it offers more gear variation and the assets already exist

pretty sure we had them in kotor. doesnt matter if it makes sense to us or not if thats the case. the lore of these can exist has been served up to us in starwars already. yep mandos had them.

then a belt with 1250/1250 is win/win
assets exist
doesn't affect current PSG's already made / require new PSG implementation
still sci-fi

I think from an implementation point of view its probably easier to change a PSG to have kinetic damage resistance than adding armour values to a belt.

Have to consider that PSGs behave differrently to belts (in their current implementation) as they are more complicated than just adding a flat armour value, as they also lose condition and will discharge when hit with the appropriate damage type. Unless this new "belt" was masked as a PSG to operate in the same way...but it just seems like an overcomplication.

An AS could always give the PSG a custom name on request to be more "sci-fi" when its kinetic layered.

The lore fallacy is a trap. Don't let hypothetical lore conflict remove fun from the game

a PSG as an item, sure, it makes sense in some ways to just make it have ele/kinetic but when you are struck with a PSG there will be checks for things like where the damage is coming from in terms of a ranged weapon not a melee etc. which is why it's probably just easier from a combat system side to just have them as values on a belt so you aren't messing with it

it also means existing PSG's are safe and won't be broken etc. which in a live ops game is important to consider

if its a belt it could also have different layers in as well i'm sure to theorycraft further should people want to
the code is already there

One of the purposes of a PSG is that its meant to add a slight protection vs ranged attacks (in its current state, just energy), and as you pointed out, it detects if the damage is coming from a melee or ranged weapon.

Unless I'm misunderstanding your idea, this means your suggested belts will just have a flat damage resistance? Problem with that is, that protects against all damage sources, including melee. This isn't what the playervoice is suggesting, which is that kinetic ranged attacks can get resisted by a PSG if it has the protection built-in to it. Why would anyone use a PSG if this was an option?

i would like to note the kotor shields you have to choose between resisting melee or range. you cannot get the best of both worlds in said game. my idea of improvement is put in a whole new item. that registers for melee instead* of ranged. straight kinetic resist but only against melee weapons hitting it.

PSG's whole existence is to mitigate the fact that some weapons can hit you well before you can so you can have some kind of chance to do something provided you arent also using a longer range weapon
