Proposal
Move to a tier style/ color coded system, based on rarity. Have a letter next to the stat instead of a percent
Example -
armor level 10 mass -
10,000-9,099 is (K) Keeper - Blue (below 3 deviations but still valuable)
9,100-7099 is (G) Good - Green (3-3.25 deviations)
7100-5100 is (E) Elite - Orange (3.25-3.5 deviations)
5101-3100 is (NU) Near Unicorn - Yellow (3.5-3.75 deviations)
3101-1100 is (U) Unicorn - Gold (3.75-4 deviations)
Above or.. below the Unicorn threshold (SS) Super Stat 4+ deviations

The abbreviations can be changed, the colors can be changed, to whatever the community , senate or devs think is best. But this is the easiest example. Some sort of abbreviation, based on deviation.
Justification
This will make everyone vet and noob be on the same page of evaluating parts, quicker, easier, and help establish an even playing field when a noob looks something, they will not question if they know if they have a great part or not.
Motivation
This topic is brought up multiple times a month, spread sheets are still used, old links, people dont know how rare an item is, new folks have no clue what the precents mean, we have unicorns at 400% on some parts, unicorns at 96%, fantastic parts at 93%, trash items at 97%, the percent system doesnt work at scale, doesn't help the population determining if a value is good or not on a space part.
I feel as if we need move away from the current percent style space loot evaluation tool on the in- game UI to a more tier style system or color coded system.

I like the idea, but I feel like it'd require quite a bit of going through stuff to set the individual part stat ranges for every tier.

A year ago my big push was getting the space loot evaluation updated. It got through and we were given access to it, but the problem we ran into is that the current system uses a linear evaluation and space part loot is a bell curve. There is a high priority desire to move the eval system to a better system, but it just hasn't made it to the point that anyone that could fix it has the time to fix it. The current eval system only lets you pick the 100% stat, and then it divides the stat you looted by the 100% stat, and displays that. Its extremely inaccurate and the only way to fix it is to completely redo it.

This can be done via the space community, Ive already done this for quite a few parts - and theres also tools already set up to show deviations - Id be glad to take this on :)

I just feel as if trashing it, and simple excel formulas with a range of a given stat - enter color - Id be glad to take this on - you can have the game pull from a text file

I think we could likely make this an extension of our upcoming web work that would allow the community to collectively align on where parts should be via a web interface and that would then be reflected in the game. This whole thing has been a problem for awhile (there's some great explanations from NoStyleGuy about it in our Discord)

Thanks for the reply Aconite, that would be great

Would be awesome to see a revisit of this idea! The current evaluation system is fine but still requires a lot of questions, knowledge and experience to know how to even use it or even what it's for in the first place. Even if at first it's just multiple colors/tiers (giving names to each color) and adjusting where the 100% starts at. Any change to move it forward to being more intuitive for new and veteran players alike would be great.

I think it will help long time vets, and hardcore spacers - as a quick glance guide thats actually in game, I know parts very very well, but even I , alt tab, open up a tool to know exactly how rare somthing is, or the value I put on somthing, if I could do this in game, at a glance, it would be a huge QoL for a vet like me. For a noob or new players, they will know EXACTLY how good somthing is, without needing the requirement for outside sources, downloading tool not even meant for resto, or requiring people to go to discord for opinions, more things that we can put in game for players the better. - please leave a reply on your thoughts if youre reading this.

Make this happen! Pretty please.

Learning how the stats work for each ship component is part of learning ship builds. Plug-and-play looking at a color code, percentage, abbreviation, or whatever doesn't help a new player understand what their component does, or whether or not they can go with a lesser quality booster for example to save mass for something else. They''ll just think green/G/85%/(fill-in-the-blank) = I have to keep that part on my ship.

Slightly off-topic, but would adding some more descriptive text, e.g. a tooltip for each stat help with that? To understand what a part or a stat would be doing.

Agreed but that’s outside of the scope of this PV.

For advanced users, I’d even like to see std deviations/sigma as a toggle on/off tooltip function. This would further reduce reliance on tools being used outside of the game.

I'm a new player but I feel like my take on this may be valuable. I've done AoA on two characters, and the first time I went through it, I had no clue at all how valuable some of the parts I received were. I didn't become more involved in asking around in the discord or reaching out to people for help for quite some time.

Who knows how many millions of credits I missed out on because I wasn't sure just how good 101% on a stat is vs. 120% or more. With gray, blue and green being the only options, it was difficult for me to be confident in what I was getting, so I told myself that there was no harm done, and I'll probably find more interesting parts later on anyway.

SWG has a unique problem where every single server seems to do something different in terms of ship balancing, or it seems that way at face value from search engines. The last time I played SWG was as a child in the original servers, so my game knowledge is nil, and it's the same problem with asking an AI as a layman in any field, you can't know if the information you're receiving is good unless you can verify the truth yourself.

Then there are pins in the discord which seem nice as a guide for pricing parts or figuring out what a good chase part is, until you speak to someone who plays now and they inform you that the stats are different now, but it's too much information to quantify and people are busy so who is going to take the time to sit down and math stuff out with me, a stranger? Maybe there are people who have better tools, or spreadsheets which is great for min-maxing at the highest levels, but I'll always cast my vote in the ring to make information as available in-game as possible so the experience for new players is enhanced, but everyone up to space-gods can still benefit without having to hop on the spreadsheets. If the change is possible, it should be done. The current barrier for entry in space can be intimidating. In an effort to unify information about this specific server, it could be nice if players never had to look elsewhere to accidentally be misinformed by data current to say, Legends or something.

Then there's just something as simple as enhancing the literal gameplay experience. If I get a green drop now, there's a bit of work involved to see if I should be excited, but if a shield drops with an orange number, I immediately know that I struck gold and I can be excited in the moment, and in the game.

Always in support of tools that lessen the opaque-ness swg has with its various systems

I never really got into RE simply because I couldn't easily tell what was worth keeping. I started keeping a lot more when the colors and %'s rolled out.

I don't have much to add that wasn't already brought up in the senate channel, great ideas all around though, love to see movement in this area

Agreed, less reliance on outside tools is a HUGE QOL for space.

This is a wonderful reply, and really hits the nail on the head - you as a new player posting this, gives us SO much valuable insight, so really thank you for this, looking forward to seeing you around on your space journey!
