Bring A New Era to Space: Re-introduce Atmospheric Flight

Bring A New Era to Space: Re-introduce Atmospheric Flight
This idea/suggestion is Open. You can respond to ask questions or discuss the idea and either vote it up or down if you believe it should or should not be implemented, respectively. Popular suggestions and ideas will be considered by the development team to become reality in-game.
Proposal
Implement an improved version of atmospheric flight, addressing many of the concerns people had from it's implementation in live (min height/ idle restrictions) to prevent griefing.
Make it so that players can only launch and land in starports.
Justification
This change would bring about a new direction in space development, helping to get more players into the space aspect of SWG.
Motivation
Space and ground SWG feel like two completely separate games.
Introducing this mechanic will bridge the two together, motivating more players to participate in space, and vice versa.
One of the biggest problems that I think many players have with space is that it feels like a completely separate experience from the rest of SWG.
A good way to remedy this, in my opinion, is to work to develop atmospheric flight and introduce it within SWGR.
We have plenty of community feedback from the way it was implemented in live, and an improved version of the mechanic could be introduced, mitigating the concerns many have.
Allowing proper interaction between players in ground and space will bring the communities together.
It seems plenty of spacers are already interested in this change, and pursuing this should boost the space player population in the long term.

For a first implementation, it would be nice to see if the development team can get the mechanic introduced and working.
Then changes to current gameplay methods brought about by this change can be discussed.

(EDIT: To remove confusion and correct my initial wording, I have edited the PV to make it clear that I want a custom implementation in Resto, not just copying the way it was made in live)

The original PV literally said "re-implement the atmospheric flight mechanic released within the last few months of live" - is it so baffling and "smooth brain" that people would read that as implementing the version we had on live, as that's exactly what it said?View attachment 9411

I am confused why you are opposed to adding some substance to a PV? The purpose of a PV isn't to vote for a black box. If you need a refresher of the guidance I would recommend: About PlayerVoice - What is It & How to Use It

People should not have to read through hundreds of discord messages to understand what a PV is about either. And considering the number of ideas being thrown around it's even more unclear what this PV is about.

Ideas being thrown around like this (from discord) are enough to make me never want to implement atmospheric flight without some clearer direction, FYI.

"Ground players of that same faction then have an ability to mark a specific area with the flare AOE ability (faction cooldown like general airstrike). Enemy players/objectives in this area will then be attackable by player ships"
it's probably a little unfair to assume that they meant "please bring in a buggy mess that doesn't function well and causes problems and don't try to make it not bad" but okay. And then the PV changed so idk what the issue is.

this PV seems to cover all those things, though? What part do you feel it's lacking in?

it feels like you're taking a stance against a generally broad system because you take issue with possible issues that might arise from subsystems that could potentially be implemented later? and this also takes an assumption that any such subsystems wouldn't be thought out. People discussing ideas won't necessarily make them happen and it's probably okay to think about stuff and talk about them to figure out a best path. But that would be under the assumption there's an atmospheric flight system so I guess I don't see the opposition to that in general? Is it because you don't like the PV format of this post or is it because somebody could think about an idea for it you don't like?

Once a more content-driven, compelling reason is implemented or at least being worked on i can understand a need for this.

Until then its a no from me just so dev time is not spent on something that's almost purely cosmetic at this stage.

If we want to make flash points look more realistic with fighters above I'm sure we can add some of the ones that are already in the game in some areas to the sky box in flashpoint areas

First a foremost this would be a big change.

I also hear the sentiment of "why?"

I think you HAVE to launch this with content, if youre going to launch it. I believe there must be an outline to the content, and whats possible to get people off the fence.

I believe you MUST have end game space escorts like the ground ones. Reward space battle tokens. Overt only? idk.
I believe you MUST add in a new set of end game duties. Make this where you intro group duties. (Previous PV incorporation)

I think you must also make it aware and balance the system, that rich spacers, with uber parts, can have an IMPACT on ground, but not necessarily control ground pvp. It wouldnt be fair.
Can you shoot grounders? How much damage do you inflict? Its a scary thought thinking you could get one shot and cloner camped by air raids. The actions of few, cannot control the outcome for many.

Give rocket launchers to grounders.

I think we can all actually get behind the idea of that , atmo flight would be cool. Let's not pretend it wouldnt be.
It would probably drive more population. To the server, and to our space community, seeing ships flying around above them in Mos (anything)

I dont think people are against atmo, I think people are against what it could do/ mean / or dont want it because they dont see any content attached to it. So whats the point. Content, thats the point. We need to discuss the content if this is going to fly.

I for one am FOR atmo flight, with meaningful content. That adds to the interface of ground control/ pvp to a certain extent, and more content rich pve activities to further support current space systems, and give us more to do.

This is 100% possible. Atmo flight is sweet, and the thought prosses on the content is whats going to get up votes / and get people excited, not just atmo flight

This would be worth to experiment. If it was in the original, it should be brought into Resto sooner or later. Any potentials issues can be fixed through trials and errors.
This would also bring together those who favor purely ground and space content in joined events.
Like I wrote earlier, we could limit the flights here for the smaller ships like with low mass as starters, which would also give them a spotlight to shine, where in deep space they get overshadowed by big mass ships.

This is a great idea bringing communities together firing missiles of love at each other and building bridges.

Would it also be possible to add also force pull like Vader can pull a star destroyer down so Jedi can just stop the ships and bring them down, force pull out the pilot and fight them on the ground as this will add to the immersion imo, obviously this should only be a powerful ability at Jedi master but low cooldown with pretty decent force cost.

I think also dual wielding rocket launchers for non-Jedi would be good as big ships firing torpedos might do too much dmg, how much damage would you anticpate a bombing run would do on a player?

Thnks!!

I want to toss in some ideas that could maybe add to this. With understanding that this is a request for a basic feature, there is a lot of potential for more granular systems within it. So here's some "dream ideas" that this type of system/environment could lend to.

New types of ships
-Maybe enemies or players could have different chassis that only work in sky environments

Supply Line Conflict
-As atmosphere is realistically different than no atmosphere, and as you have to fight gravity to leave it, it's not hard to imagine that it's more difficult to protect a cargo ship in the atmosphere. Attacking those could be rewarding and in addition to that...

Crashes!
-If a cargo ship explodes in atmosphere or gets downed, perhaps things on board could fall to the planet surface. This makes atmosphere flight something that ground can directly see benefits from outside of a PVP setting (which also has potential don't worry)

Supply Drops?
-In a similar line of thinking, maybe ships can toss down supplies to ground players. I don't know. there don't seem to be many wanderers so maybe that's silly but whatever it could work

Bird Fishing?
-There are birds. What's to stop you from going to 0 speed and fishing for birds. Is it silly? maybe yeah, I'm just spitballing

No-Fly Zones
-Maybe whatever governing faction can randomly implement no fly zones which can serve as high-level combat challenges with maybe better drops or potential to do some GCW damage to a side. Very hostile when entered. Maybe even neutral gets hunted down and has the option to sporadically gain opposing faction rep.

Different Gear
-Space is obv different from air, so I hear, so maybe there can be additional gear that works better in atmosphere than in space. Maybe current lousy gear can be retro-worked into that giving drops a more broad usefulness.

PVP
-Yeah shoot each other on ground and sky woo. Obviously would need balancing. Maybe it's like a thing you earn the right to in a battle or overall like you can't just show up in a ship you have to get to that level. But then also introduce things to level it for people on the ground. Maybe battles can get new types of things. Supply and evac where a large ship has to pick things up and other players protect it. Maybe battles can extend so like if things go a certain way on the ground, now suddenly the pilots have to take to space to prevent reinforcements. That might be fun.

Seamless Travel (This was the "another idea" mentioned in my edit note)
-Maybe everyone would hate this but I think it would be neat if the shuttle wasn't instant but instead you took a little trip on it. Maybe it has an interior you can walk around in. Look out the windows. Interact with people. Maybe get stopped by imperials for inspection or attacked by pirates. Maybe a BH can board and attack a jedi trying to hide on it. Protecting shuttles? Transports? Plus it expands to space proper. idk this is like a giant branch in its own right. That's a whole other can of worms probably, but atmospheric flight opens a lot of doors.

I think there's a lot of potential for cool systems if atmospheric flight is a thing, maybe if other people think so too they can share them.

Edit - I had another idea

Fully support at the very least a peak and see can it be done at a bare bones level fairly simply.

Get a bare bones system in place.

There are so many ideas for content that can follow that involve ground and space communities nuch of which already semi exists in game at a code level.

But it's very much a system that needs an implementation and polish before can look at the various previously discussed pieces of content.

As cool as it was at the end of the live servers, implementing it here would negate the recently added vehicle upgrade system imo. However allowing multiple homing beacons 1 per planet would be amazing!
