Proposal
Keep generative AI out of resto and work to replace the current AI art with human made designs from the community
Justification
With the current perception of gen-AI art being lazy, lacking any sort of appreciation for real art, and built on plagiarizing real artists (not even including the terrible environmental and economic impact) I feel that we shouldn't continue to add artwork made with such a technology into our retro mmo. To continue doing so, in my opinion, actively goes against what makes this game, and how it came to be, special.
Motivation
Seeing multiple people, myself included, lose excitement for the 5th anniversary because our gifts were AI slop paintings, makes me want to at least have this discussion.
Pretty self explanatory, I think with the current shift in public sentiment around gen-AI art we really should have a say as a community whether we even want this slop in our retro mmo.

I personally think it adds nothing and only hurts the image of the server to continue to add gen-AI assets, even if they are currently limited to paintings.

i really hope a lot of you artistic connoisseurs apply to create art for the server for free given how much A.I. slop images in a 20 yr old game is ruining your lives :rolleyes:
 
I do agree that AI is painful to see when its obvious, but honestly don't have an issue at all when its been implemented/"designed" properly. I think we should keep in mind, removing usage of AI art on here may just result in us seeing far less content/artwork implemented (if any).

Until we get someone who is happy to design art for the project on a reasonably consistent basis i don't think its worth the sacrifice of having no art added at all.
 
I'm not sure anyone is suggesting that there are demands being made for AI paintings to be added lol. I think it's likely the dev's wanting to give something to the community, particularly with anniversary celebrations etc. This is the thing, not everyone has the talent to design great works of art people will be happy with, so AI feels like a compromise on the art people want included and the size of the talent pool we have available.

But now the conversation is being had on the ethics of continuing operating that way.

Which i think resto will indirectly endorse gen-ai art if they continue, and if thats the case then this will sadly not be a project I'll spend much of my time on anymore.
If the opinion of the devs after this convo is "we don't care and just want cheap art" then yea, my faith in this project will be gone
 
I get what you're saying and why you're saying it and but i genuinely think this comes from a good place from the Dev team. I really do think this is a matter of the art team wanting to give us content, not to provide us with anything substandard or cheap etc.

I think AI art can have a place in the game, providing it looks and feels more at home within the game itself in terms of design and detail.

I get you're passionate and for all the right reasons, i just think the art team would also run into criticism if no art got added at all and we dont have anyone to my knowledge, who would fill this gap atm.
 
A human didn't even make the things they are giving us so by that nature it is cheap and substandard

I just disagree with you that AI has any space in this game

Every player that wants new stuff, as they must have things.

Resto has one artist doing most of the assets. Other modellers need to sign up and get involved.

The demand for things and stuff just get more over time.

I get your point but is what it is
 
I'm just hoping to prevent resto from becoming the ai-slop server

It would be very ironic for legends to have the bot server criticism while we suck at the teet of ai to produce anything new

It would also be nice to get some sort of statement from staff about the future of their ai use.

If its something they plan to continue using then the least they can do is own up to it if they're so proud of its output.

And it would let people who's line in sand is AI choose not to further support the project if all future content is going to be made with ai

you really need to chill with this nonsense if you and your ilk of purists art connoisseurs are so outraged because of a couple of A.I. generated paintings delete them and end of story. Expecting the dev team to publicly confess to using a tool as though they've done something wrong and should be ashamed is performative outrage, especially in a 20 yr old game , get a life you snowflake ! :rolleyes:

When I joined this server, the AI portraits were the first things to make me go "huh?" In a bad way. Even if you do believe AI stuff is art, it still doesn't look good. Whether or not it should be stopped, idk, I don't care, do what you want. I try to ignore it. But just wanted to say.

The team should be able to use whatever tools they need. If they have the artists, by all means, but in lieu of that, unless you're going to sign up and help with art on your own, then I think it's hilariously demanding of you to say what the team can and can't use.

Absolutely not. Let's leave this reddit circle jerk out of the discourse on this server. It's a private server that's being held up by donations, not a multi billion dollar development studio. I say take it further and get Claude Fable involved on the coding part.
