Proposal
Keep generative AI out of resto and work to replace the current AI art with human made designs from the community
Justification
With the current perception of gen-AI art being lazy, lacking any sort of appreciation for real art, and built on plagiarizing real artists (not even including the terrible environmental and economic impact) I feel that we shouldn't continue to add artwork made with such a technology into our retro mmo. To continue doing so, in my opinion, actively goes against what makes this game, and how it came to be, special.
Motivation
Seeing multiple people, myself included, lose excitement for the 5th anniversary because our gifts were AI slop paintings, makes me want to at least have this discussion.
Pretty self explanatory, I think with the current shift in public sentiment around gen-AI art we really should have a say as a community whether we even want this slop in our retro mmo.

I personally think it adds nothing and only hurts the image of the server to continue to add gen-AI assets, even if they are currently limited to paintings.

The team should be able to use whatever tools they need. If they have the artists, by all means, but in lieu of that, unless you're going to sign up and help with art on your own, then I think it's hilariously demanding of you to say what the team can and can't use.

pack it all up I guess guys, if nobody is willing to sign up and code, write or develop content for the server then the entire concept of PV is closed. No more PVs unless you create the content for it yourself first.

- A useless PV: “I don’t like this!! You should stop”
- A useful PV: “Here’s an idea I have to fix this issue or improve a feature”

This PV is strictly a dig at the team using tools (controversial to some) available to them because they are short staffed in certain areas of development.

A better way to address AI use in the game, if it’s an issue for people and especially when the issue is focused on art would be to first go on discord and gather interest and volunteers to provide artwork, then create a PV to propose allowing community members to submit original artwork and provide a summary of what information and volunteers were gathered on discord.

The original PV is a vapid attempt at gathering support to raise some pitchforks towards the development team using the most recent internet controversy.

If AI code was used to implement a new feature for your favorite profession in the game, I’d wager that: A) You wouldn’t even know about it in the first place. B) You’d be more than happy to ignore it based on the fact it benefits you. C) It’s highly unlikely you’d fight for the rights of *checks notes* “poor struggling coders”.

The PV is getting the response it’s getting because the dev team has more than done their fair share to advertise the fact they’re always hiring, especially on the art team. Every time the same subject is brought up, there’s a slew of people claiming they’d be happy to contribute and 0 applications going towards joining the team to actually contribute.

first line in the PV mentions replacing them with work from artists, did you even read the PV?

If it came to pass that vibecoded slop was used I would have the exact same reaction.

I'm not going to bother arguing about the 'most recent internet controversy' because it would be a waste of effort, the negative effects of this 'tool' are already widely evidenced.

you talk about torches and pitchforks but that seems to be all the detractors in this thread have been able to muster so far.

If your stance is going to be "you cant say anything about this unless you cough up the work for it" then I expect none of you to raise or respond to any PVs in the future without finalised asset and code packs attached to each PV submitted; yes it is a ridiculous position to take, that is my point.

The Luddites were members of a 19th-century movement of English textile workers who protested the use of certain types of automated machinery due to concerns relating to worker pay, child labour, working conditions and output quality. They often destroyed the machines in organised raids

Based.

I'd like to see an argument for how AI slop paintings contribute to the aesthetics of Star Wars Galaxies. Does anyone actually LIKE them? Like yeah, just destroy them from your inventory, problem solved. But I'm curious lol

Thats what I wana know

Also destroying them only goes so far when they are also displayed in an npc building in Bestine

All i'm hearing from Ai boot lickers is that content MUST be made at all costs and if that means injecting slop into the game then so be it?
I hope these same people also don't have any complaints about Disney and how they ruin star wars if Ai slop is how we want to operate here

The project set out to restore swg, its restored, mission accomplished! Why ruin that with all this Ai bullshit just to appease content addicts.

When I joined here a year and a half ago (and to an extent in 2021) I never had expectations of ANY new content being added to the game past whatever was released on live, and I would have happily been on this sever till the lights went out if that was the timeline we were in because I just like that game that much. But now I have to re-evaulate all that because I can't be sure that the game isn't going to slowly mutate into some slop live service mmo just because we can make cheap art with Ai

But hey content right?

All I'm hearing are bad faith arguments to justify removing content simply because it wasn't generated by a human being, for no other purpose than to crusade for the sake of crusading.

A team member came up with the ideas behind the art work, the general scene, composition, idea and created a prompt. All the AI did was generate the art from said prompt and the team member implemented it into the game. IMO, the AI generated art doesn't clash with the general vibe of the game any more than the real world poster for Empire Strikes Back does to break immersion.

This isn't to say all new areas or content are heavily using AI for this purpose, the team does have artists, they have sections on Discord asking for help with 3D models and textures. My point is, if you have these skills, by all means help the team and contribute. I do NOT understand the pure desire to turn around and tell the team how to implement a specific feature if you're simply a passive observer who has no skin in the game in the first place. You don't pay for this product, you're not entitled or owed any attention to tell a team working on this project as a hobby how they're going to further develop the server.

I find the argument about "content must be made at all costs" even more in bad faith. Restoration's entire gimmick is being a blend of concepts inspired by the Combat Update, with all the NGE content. That content requires effort to re-implement, it's not as simple as picking and choosing features to backport, merge, and call a day. Real changes have to be made under the hood to facilitate this. All the while, the team is working on adding new planets, quests, and activities. If they choose to use AI to help them with code or art, then that's their decision and If they have enough human contributors and decide in the future that they have enough humans to want to ban AI in their further development, that's their decision too.

What is the name of this forum? People are just sharing their opinions and the pro-AI crowd always comes in hot.

This from the guy who said that people can't raise concerns or suggestions without contributing assets to address them. Either you don't know what a bad faith argument is, or you're not being genuine.

I do not like A.I. slop nor do i support it
I also understand if the dev team decides to add a few paintings is probably because they are short staffed in the art dpt.
I also don't come here trying to shame the dev team for adding them , especially when i can delete offending art work
IF anybody is really this offended by a few paintings and the building in Bestine which is a choice to go see , then you really need to re evaluate the priorities in life
And if your life is in shambles everyday because of a few A.I. paintings then call your Senator and Representative and stop with the fake outrage

Get outa here with your bad take boomer shit, this is a players voice, i'm using the tools given to us to bring up issues I feel are related to the future of the game

If the topic upsets you so much, stop engaging with it
